The K-9 Unit of the Blount County Sheriff’s Department falls under the Narcotics and Investigations Divisions and is a growing unit. As it stands the unit has 4 dogs, two narcotic detection dogs and two bloodhound tracking dogs. These highly trained dogs are responsible for providing information undetectable to their human handlers. The K9 unit is called upon to fulfill many tasks within the department. Their services include criminal apprehension, building searches, area searches, evidence detection, narcotics detection, tracking missing persons, tracking fleeing suspects, crowd control and for protecting the lives of their handlers and other law enforcement counter parts.  Each handler is a deputy with the training and knowledge to maintain, handle and work these animals to the highest degree. They are tasked with the daily maintenance of the animals along with housing them. These animals are law enforcement officers just as their human counterparts.Through the efforts of Sheriff Arrington, one K9 team is available twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week to protect the citizens of Blount County.
